LEARN TO GRAPPLE.

CHALLENGE YOURSELF.
Discover Adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu in Taunton at Evolution Martial Arts. Our BJJ classes welcome complete beginners alongside experienced grapplers, providing a structured environment where adults can learn, train and continually challenge themselves.
Whether you want to improve your fitness, learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, develop practical grappling skills or eventually compete, you can start from wherever you are now.

BJJ offers something very different from a conventional gym workout.
Classes combine technical instruction, partner drilling, positional training and live grappling, challenging you both physically and mentally.
Rather than simply exercising, you're continually learning how to move, control positions, escape and apply techniques against another person.
That combination makes Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu incredibly engaging — there's always another problem to solve.
That's Exactly Where You're Supposed to Start.
You don't need to be fit, strong, flexible or experienced before starting BJJ.
Beginners are taught progressively, starting with fundamental movements, positions and techniques before developing into more advanced training.
You aren't expected to know what you're doing on your first class.
YOU DON'T GET READY FOR BJJ. BJJ HELPS YOU GET READY.

BJJ provides demanding full-body exercise, developing cardiovascular fitness, muscular endurance, mobility and general physical conditioning through training.

Every session develops practical Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu knowledge rather than simply providing exercise for the sake of exercise.

BJJ is often as much about thinking as physical ability. Every training partner creates different problems requiring you to adapt your strategy and technique.

Developing the ability to remain composed, solve problems and apply techniques against resistance creates a genuine sense of progress and achievement.

BJJ might be an individual martial art, but progress depends heavily on training partners. You'll learn, drill, roll and improve alongside other members of the Evolution BJJ community.

A typical session combines technical instruction and demonstration, partner drilling and opportunities to practise techniques in increasingly realistic situations.
As students develop, controlled live grappling often called rolling — allows them to test their techniques against partners who are actively trying to improve their own position.
Walking into a BJJ academy for the first time can feel intimidating. We want your first experience at Evolution to be the opposite.
You'll be introduced to the training environment, learn some fundamental skills and work at an appropriate level for your experience.
Nobody expects a beginner to already understand Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
COME IN AS A BEGINNER. LEAVE HAVING LEARNED SOMETHING NEW.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art with an enormous amount of depth, and progression takes time.
Students begin as white belts and develop their knowledge and ability through consistent training before progressing through the adult BJJ belt system:
Each belt represents a significant stage of development rather than simply time spent attending classes.
For many practitioners, that's exactly what makes achieving a BJJ belt so rewarding.

EVERY BELT REPRESENTS PROGRESS. EVERY GRADE IS ANOTHER STEP IN THE JOURNEY.
As you gain experience, BJJ becomes increasingly individual.
Different body types, abilities and personalities naturally favour different positions and techniques. Over time, students begin connecting techniques together and developing their own approach to grappling.
Your instructor gives you the foundations but ultimately, your BJJ becomes your own.
You don't have to compete to practise Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Many adults simply enjoy the challenge of learning, rolling, improving their fitness and being part of the club.
For students who want to test themselves further, BJJ competition provides another challenge and an opportunity to apply their skills against competitors from other academies.
Competition is your choice.
