AGES 7–15
LEARN. GROW. BUILD CONFIDENCE.
Our Junior Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes in Taunton give children and teenagers an exciting way to learn martial arts while developing confidence, fitness, coordination and problem-solving skills.
Evolution's Junior BJJ programme introduces young people to grappling through age-appropriate coaching, technical training, partner exercises and controlled live practice.
Children don't need previous martial arts experience. Beginners learn the fundamentals progressively while developing the confidence and skills needed to tackle increasingly challenging situations.
No experience needed. Everyone starts as a beginner.

Children need to listen carefully, practise techniques and work constructively with their training partners, encouraging greater concentration and positive training habits.

Grappling uses the whole body. Regular training develops movement, balance, coordination, strength, stamina and general physical fitness.

Not every technique works first time. BJJ teaches children to keep trying, adapt and learn from mistakes, making challenges part of the learning process.

Learning new techniques, solving problems and seeing themselves improve gives children regular opportunities to experience achievement and build belief in their own abilities.

BJJ constantly presents students with new situations. Children learn to think, adapt and find solutions rather than simply relying on physical strength.

Partner training means children regularly work alongside other students, helping them develop communication, teamwork and friendships within the club.

A typical Junior BJJ class combines movement and warm-up activities with technical instruction, partner drills, positional exercises and controlled grappling.
Students learn how to move safely, control positions, escape, transition and apply age-appropriate Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu techniques while developing the confidence to use those skills against a resisting partner.
Classes are structured to challenge students while keeping training positive, controlled and enjoyable.
Younger students focus on building strong foundations through movement, fundamental BJJ positions and age-appropriate grappling exercises while developing confidence, coordination and listening skills.

Older juniors progress into increasingly technical training, developing a deeper understanding of positions, escapes, transitions and controlled live grappling while preparing for the transition towards adult BJJ.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu teaches children that difficult situations don't always require panic or physical strength.
During training, students regularly find themselves in positions where they need to stay calm, think about what they've learned and work methodically towards a solution. Over time, this can help children become more comfortable with challenge, mistakes and the process of trying again.
BJJ provides children with a long-term pathway where progression comes through consistent training, technical development and growing understanding.
As students improve, they develop new skills, take on increasingly difficult challenges and progress through the junior BJJ belt system.
The emphasis isn't simply on reaching the next belt — it's on becoming a more knowledgeable, confident and capable martial artist along the way.

Junior Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can be the beginning of a martial arts journey that lasts for many years.
As students grow older, they can transition into Evolution's Adult Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu programme, continuing to develop their grappling and progressing through the adult belt system.
FIRST CLASS → JUNIOR BJJ → ADULT BJJ → BLACK BELT & BEYOND
Children can enjoy BJJ simply because they love learning, training and spending time with their teammates. For students who want an additional challenge, BJJ competitions provide an opportunity to test their skills against other young grapplers.

Our Junior Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu classes in Taunton are for children aged 7–15. Training is adapted to suit younger and older juniors, allowing children to develop their BJJ skills progressively as they grow.
No. Complete beginners are welcome. Your child doesn't need any previous BJJ, martial arts or grappling experience. Our instructors will introduce the fundamental movements, positions and techniques progressively and help them develop at an appropriate pace.
Like all contact sports, BJJ carries some risk of injury, but children's training can be structured to reduce unnecessary risk. At Evolution, techniques are introduced progressively, with an emphasis on control, safe practice and looking after training partners. Competition organisations such as the IBJJF also use age divisions and age-specific rules for junior athletes.
No. Competition is completely optional. Children can train BJJ simply to learn martial arts, become more active, build confidence and enjoy training with their teammates. For students who want an additional challenge, competition can become another part of their BJJ journey.
For their first class, your child can wear comfortable sports clothing that allows them to move freely. Because BJJ involves close-contact grappling, we recommend clothing without zips or anything that could catch on a training partner, and something you don't mind potentially getting stretched or damaged.
Your child doesn't need to buy a BJJ Gi before trying their first class. Comfortable sports clothing is fine for their trial. If they decide to continue training, we can explain what Gi and equipment they will need.
Children develop through the Junior BJJ belt system, which is different from the adult belt system. Progression recognises their developing technical knowledge, practical ability and experience as they grow. The recognised children's BJJ progression includes grey, yellow, orange and green belt groups, with age affecting which belts are available
At Evolution, our junior pathway is:
White → Grey/White → Grey → Grey/Black → Yellow/White → Yellow → Yellow/Black → Orange/White → Orange → Orange/Black → Green/White → Green → Green/Black
