LEARN. ADAPT. OVERCOME.

Discover Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) in Taunton at Evolution Martial Arts. Our structured BJJ programme provides training for juniors and adults, from complete beginners taking their first class through to experienced grapplers.

Learn the technical and strategic side of grappling while improving your fitness, confidence, problem-solving and ability to control an opponent in a friendly and progressive training environment.

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, commonly known as BJJ, is a grappling-based martial art that focuses heavily on controlling an opponent through positioning, leverage and technique. Rather than relying primarily on punches and kicks, students learn how to grapple, control positions, escape difficult situations and apply submission techniques. Because BJJ is highly technical, students continually learn how timing, positioning and effective use of leverage can overcome strength alone.

What Makes Brazilian

Jiu-Jitsu Different?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is sometimes described as physical problem-solving. During training, your opponent is constantly moving, defending and trying to improve their own position, meaning you have to continually adapt.

Students don't simply memorise techniques. They learn to recognise situations, make decisions and apply the right technique at the right moment.

TECHNIQUE & LEVERAGE

Learn to use positioning and efficient movement rather than relying solely on strength.

PROBLEM-SOLVING

Every roll presents different situations requiring decisions and adaptations.

LIVE TRAINING

Develop the ability to apply techniques against a resisting training partner.

CONTINUOUS LEARNING

There is always another position, escape, transition or technique to develop.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Competition

Competition provides BJJ students with an optional opportunity to test their skills against grapplers from other clubs.

Some Evolution students simply enjoy learning and rolling each week, while others want the challenge of competition.

Both pathways are equally welcome.

Students interested in competing can develop their skills through training and access appropriate competition opportunities as they progress.

Frequently Asked Questions About Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Do I need to be fit before starting?

No. You don't need to get fit before you start BJJ. Your fitness, strength, mobility and stamina can develop naturally through regular training. Start where you are and allow your fitness to improve as your experience grows.

What should my child wear to their first class?

Absolutely. Our Adult BJJ classes in Taunton welcome complete beginners. You aren't expected to understand the positions, terminology or techniques before you arrive — that's what we're here to teach you.
